I am sure every upcoming artist who sings pure rnb, hiphop, alternative, soul and other genre of music which is not the usual Nigerian pop music has heard the statement “give us party song abeg” when playing their demo to friends and families.
As heartbreaking as it is, especially if it took a lot of passion and creativity to pen your art just for someone to say, if the tempo of the song cannot rock the club then it’s not going to be a successful song. Here’s a list of artist who started that career with mega hits from songs that were not a club banger.
ASA fire on the mountain
OLAMIDE eni duro
DAGRIN pom pom pom
FAZE faze alone
BURNA BOI like to party …even though it has the word party in it, its quite slow and not the usual bps “beat per second” that rocks the club
WANDE COAL ololufe
BLACKMAGIC rainbow (was very successful in Lagos and other parts of the country)
JON OGA just dropped surulere and;
JOHNNY DRILL is on the rise with awesome music.
And this is just to mention a few. Yes more than half of the artistes on the list are known for club bangers but the fact still remains that they kicked off their career with songs that were not club friendly. We are not saying Nigerian pop music does not have an edge over other genre. Of course it does. Thats why pop music is coined from popular music. But we are saying it is not a guarantee to having a hit song.
